Begin Holiday Planning Early
Beginning your holiday planning in October or November may seem a bit over the edge. Ask someone that never appears to be stressed out during the holidays and they will probably tell you they begin holiday planning quite early. Take to heart a few of the following suggestions on holiday planning and you too may find the holidays a more enjoyable season.
There are a few simple ways to get a good head start on the holiday season.
- greeting cards - print, sign, mail
- baking and grocery items
- outdoor décor - lights, figurines, ornaments
It is very likely that sending out your holiday greeting cards is one of the most time consuming tasks during the holidays. It can be doubly frustrating when some of them come back because your address book was out-of-date. Now would be a great time to sit down and look through your address book and make sure you are caught up and have current mailing addresses for everyone. While you're in the process of updating, you might want to check current phone numbers so you can quickly invite someone to an open house or to join you for sledding, caroling, or a shopping excursion.
When updating your address book, it is a good idea to include current e-mail addresses for your computer savvy family, friends and co-workers, so contacting them is never a problem. If you're sending out photo cards this year, there is no reason why you cannot get those envelopes addressed and stamped early. Then once those cards are back from the printer, you only have to jot a quick note, sign and mail them off. Also, be sure to schedule your photo studio session early if you are considering professional taking pictures for this year's Christmas cards.
The Christmas shopping list will no doubt be your last big task for the holidays. Once you have a good idea what you want to get everyone on your list, take some time and shop around. If you are an internet user, shop online for the best deals. Check out some of the catalogs that have recently arrived in the mail. Many internet and catalog retailers deeply discount or waive shipping altogether for customers depending on the amount of their purchase. And you can save time and frustration by having it delivered either directly to you or have the retailer gift wrap and drop ship it for you.
Finalize your grocery shopping lists as well. That way, when it is time to start baking, you will not find yourself needing to fight the crowds at the grocery store for last minute baking ingredients. You will also avoid that last minute rush to get your turkey or ham before they are all gone. Take a look at your menu and see what items can be prepped beforehand, and schedule that accordingly to make meal preparation as simple as possible.
Then there is the outdoor holiday décor. Take an early look at what outside decorations you have available and check their condition. Replace damaged light strands and broken ornaments now, so that when the time comes to display the outdoor décor everything will be ready.
With some timely holiday planning and a little creativity, the holidays can be fun and enjoyable. Preparing greeting cards, baking and ourdoor decor ahead of time will provide you with the ability to relax and reduce stress during the holidays.
